ABOUT CHEMICAL PEELS
Chemical peels are clinical-grade exfoliation treatments that remove damaged outer layers of skin, stimulate new cell turnover, and promote collagen production.
They effectively improve skin tone, texture, acne, fine lines, pigmentation, and dullness, revealing a smoother, brighter, and healthier complexion.
At Specialty Wellness & MedSpa, we offer a range of peels including Jessner’s, TCA, glycolic, and lactic acid peels — each customized to your skin type and goals.
Proper preparation and aftercare are essential for safe, even results and optimal rejuvenation.
PRE-TREATMENT CARE
Before Your Appointment
- Arrive with a clean face — no makeup, lotion, sunscreen, or skincare products.
- Avoid active skincare ingredients for 5–7 days before treatment:
- Retinoids or retinol
- AHAs/BHAs (glycolic, salicylic, lactic acid)
- Benzoyl peroxide
- Vitamin C or exfoliating serums
- Prescription acne or skin-lightening creams unless directed by your provider
- Avoid waxing, depilatories, and facial shaving for 3–5 days before the peel.
- Do not tan or have prolonged sun exposure for 2–3 weeks prior.
- Tanned, sunburned, or recently exposed skin increases the risk of hyperpigmentation.
Medications & Medical History
- Discontinue isotretinoin (Accutane) for 6 months prior to treatment.
- Avoid oral antibiotics, steroid use, or photosensitizing medications for 2 weeks before your appointment if possible.
- Inform your provider if you:
- Have had a recent chemical peel, laser, or facial procedure within 2 weeks.
- Have any skin condition such as eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, or rosacea.
- Are pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking new medications.
- If you have a history of Herpes Simplex virus (cold sores), antiviral medication (e.g., valacyclovir) may be prescribed to prevent outbreaks.
Optional Preparation
- Hydrate well for several days prior.
- Use a gentle cleanser and moisturizer leading up to your treatment to strengthen your skin barrier.
- For pigmentation or melasma, your provider may recommend a melanin-suppressing cream (hydroquinone or similar) 2–4 weeks before treatment to enhance safety and results.
POST-TREATMENT CARE
Immediately After the Peel
- Your skin may appear red, tight, or shiny immediately after treatment.
- A mild tingling or stinging sensation may occur temporarily.
- Do not wash, touch, or apply any products for at least 4–6 hours after your peel, unless instructed otherwise.
- Avoid sweating, heat exposure, or sun exposure for 48–72 hours.
First 24–48 Hours
- You may cleanse gently with a mild, non-exfoliating cleanser and lukewarm water after the initial rest period.
- Pat skin dry — do not rub or scrub.
- Apply a gentle moisturizer (as provided or recommended by your provider).
- Avoid makeup for at least 24 hours.
- Sleep on a clean pillowcase and avoid touching your face unnecessarily.
Days 2–7: Peeling Phase
- Expect mild flaking or sheet-like peeling to begin around Day 2 or 3, lasting 3–7 days, depending on peel depth and skin type.
- Do not pick, peel, or scrub the skin as it exfoliates — this may cause scarring or pigmentation.
- Continue gentle cleansing and apply moisturizer 2–3 times daily to keep skin hydrated.
- Avoid direct sun exposure and excessive heat.
- Apply broad-spectrum SPF 50+ sunscreen daily, reapplying every 2 hours when outdoors.
After Peeling Completes (Days 7–14)
- Once peeling has stopped, skin may appear pink, fresh, and more radiant.
- Avoid retinoids, exfoliants, or active products for 7–10 days after peeling ends.
- Continue daily sunscreen use and avoid prolonged sun exposure to maintain results.
- Makeup may be applied once skin feels smooth and comfortable.
- For best outcomes, use gentle, hydrating skincare for the first 2 weeks post-peel.
RESULTS AND TREATMENT PLAN
- Skin tone and clarity begin to improve after the first peel, with progressive benefits seen over 4–6 weeks.
- For best results:
- Mild Peels (Glycolic/Lactic): every 3–4 weeks
- Medium Peels (Jessner’s/TCA): every 6–8 weeks
- Series of 3–6 peels recommended for cumulative improvement
- Maintenance treatments every 3–6 months help maintain skin brightness and collagen stimulation.
