However, when administered by an expert, Juvéderm® can effectively correct signs of aging, including sun damage, and can even be used as a preventative measure to maintain smooth, youthful skin.

How Does Juvéderm® Filler Work?

Is Juvéderm Safe?

Yes, Juvéderm is FDA-approved for adults over 21 and typically requires no allergy testing. While serious complications are rare, common side effects include temporary lumps, swelling, or bruising at the injection site. These side effects typically resolve within a few days.
What Happens During the Juvéderm Procedure?

Juvéderm injections take approximately 15-20 minutes and are performed in our office. The filler contains lidocaine to minimize discomfort, but we often apply a topical anesthetic prior to the procedure. Most patients see immediate plumping and wrinkle-smoothing effects, though the final result may take a couple of days to fully settle.
How Long Do Juvéderm Results Last?

The longevity of Juvéderm results varies depending on the type of filler used and the treatment area. On average, results last between 6 to 9 months, with some formulations lasting up to 18 months. Periodic touch-ups and maintenance treatments will help extend your results.
What are the pre treatment care instructions for Juvéderm®?
Avoid Blood-Thinning Medications
For at least 1 week before your treatment, avoid medications like aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to minimize the risk of bruising. If you need pain relief, Tylenol (acetaminophen) is acceptable.

Stop Supplements
Discontinue blood-thinning supplements such as fish oil, vitamin E, ginkgo biloba, garlic, and ginseng for at least 1 week before your treatment to reduce the risk of bruising or bleeding.

No Alcohol
Avoid alcohol for 24-48 hours before your appointment, as it can increase the likelihood of bruising.

Avoid Dental Procedures
Refrain from scheduling any dental work (e.g., cleanings, root canals) for 2 weeks before and after your dermal filler treatment to prevent infection risks.

Avoid Other Skin Treatments
Facials, chemical peels, laser treatments, and other skin procedures should be avoided for at least 1 week before your filler appointment.

Shaving
If necessary, shave the treatment area the day before your procedure. Do not wax, thread, or use depilatory creams on the treated area.

Hydration
Drink plenty of water leading up to your treatment to help your skin remain hydrated, which can support the healing process.

Eat a Light Meal
Eat a light meal before your appointment to avoid feeling light-headed or faint during the procedure.

Medical Conditions
Inform your provider of any medical conditions, allergies, or medications you are taking, especially if you have a history of cold sores or any skin infections.
What are the post treatment care instructions for Juvéderm®?
Avoid Touching the Area
Do not rub, massage, or apply pressure to the treated area for at least 24 hours to prevent the filler from shifting.

Swelling & Bruising
Mild swelling, redness, and bruising are normal and should subside within a few days to a week. Applying a cold compress for 10-15 minutes at a time can help reduce swelling and discomfort.

No Strenuous Activity
Avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, or activities that cause excessive sweating for 24-48 hours after treatment to reduce the risk of swelling and bruising.

Avoid Heat Exposure
Stay away from hot baths, saunas, steam rooms, and other heat sources for 48 hours after your treatment to prevent additional swelling or irritation.

No Alcohol
Continue to avoid alcohol for 24-48 hours after your treatment to reduce the risk of swelling and bruising.

Makeup
Avoid makeup on the treated area for at least 24 hours to minimize the risk of irritation or infection. When you resume makeup, apply it gently and remove it carefully.

Stay Hydrated
Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, which helps the filler integrate into the skin and settle more effectively.

Avoid Sleeping on Your Face
For 1-2 nights after treatment, sleep on your back with your head elevated to avoid putting pressure on the treated area.

Sun Protection
Avoid direct sun exposure for at least 1 week after your treatment and use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30+ to protect the treated area from pigmentation issues.

Results Timeline
You may see immediate results, but the final outcome will be more apparent once initial swelling subsides, typically within 1-2 weeks.
The effects of dermal fillers typically last 6-18 months, depending on the type of filler, the treated area, and individual factors.

Avoid Other Skin Treatments
Do not schedule facials, chemical peels, laser treatments, or other skin treatments for 1-2 weeks after your filler session to avoid irritating the treated area.

Monitor for Side Effects
While rare, if you notice signs of infection (such as excessive redness, warmth, or discharge), severe pain, or unusual hardness or discoloration of the treated area, contact your provider immediately.

Follow-Up Appointments
Schedule follow-up appointments as recommended by your provider to evaluate the results and determine if any touch-ups or maintenance treatments are needed.
