ABOUT GLP-1 INJECTIONS

GLP-1 receptor agonists such as Semaglutide (Ozempic®, Wegovy®) and Tirzepatide (Mounjaro®, Zepbound®) are advanced injectable medications used for weight management, blood sugar control, and metabolic health.

They work by:

  • Mimicking a natural gut hormone (GLP-1) that helps regulate blood sugar and appetite.
  • Slowing gastric emptying, promoting early satiety, and reducing food cravings.
  • Improving insulin sensitivity and lowering glucose levels.

When used under medical supervision with a balanced diet and physical activity, these medications are highly effective for long-term weight loss, improved metabolism, and cardiovascular health.

PRE-TREATMENT CARE

Before Starting GLP-1 Injections

  • Discuss with your provider:
    • Any history of thyroid disorders, pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, or gastrointestinal conditions.
    • Current medications, including insulin, oral diabetes medications, or weight loss supplements, to avoid interactions.
    • Any family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or MEN2 (Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia type 2) — GLP-1s are contraindicated in these cases.
  • Fasting blood tests (glucose, A1C, liver/kidney panel, lipids) may be recommended before starting.
  • Establish baseline weight, BMI, and waist measurements for tracking progress.

Day Before and Day of Injection

  • Eat normally — fasting is not required.
  • Stay hydrated, as dehydration can worsen nausea.
  • Avoid alcohol and greasy, high-fat meals before your injection.
  • Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to your abdomen, thigh, or upper arm (injection sites).
  • If you are prone to nausea, your provider may recommend taking your injection with a small meal or in the evening.

POST-INJECTION CARE

Immediately After Injection

  • Mild redness, itching, or tenderness at the injection site is normal and should resolve within a few hours.
  • Do not rub or massage the injection area.
  • Rotate injection sites each week (abdomen, thigh, arm) to avoid irritation or bruising.
  • If bleeding occurs, apply gentle pressure with a clean gauze — do not use alcohol directly afterward.

Common Early Side Effects (First Few Weeks)

Mild side effects are common as your body adjusts, especially during dose increases:

  • Nausea, fullness, bloating, or mild stomach upset
  • Constipation or diarrhea
  • Decreased appetite
  • Fatigue or mild headache

These typically subside within a few days to weeks.

Tips to Minimize Side Effects:

  • Eat smaller, more frequent meals (5–6 light meals per day).
  • Eat slowly and stop when you feel full.
  • Avoid greasy, fried, or heavy foods.
  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day (at least 64 oz).
  • Increase fiber intake (vegetables, whole grains) to prevent constipation.
  • Avoid lying down for 1 hour after eating.

Dietary and Lifestyle Recommendations

  • Prioritize protein in every meal to preserve lean muscle.
  • Include fresh vegetables, fruits, and complex carbohydrates for balanced nutrition.
  • Avoid carbonated beverages and high-sugar drinks.
  • Limit alcohol, which can worsen nausea and affect blood sugar.
  • Exercise regularly — aim for 150 minutes per week of combined cardio and strength training.
  • Get 7–8 hours of sleep each night to support metabolic balance.

ONGOING CARE AND MONITORING

  • Your provider will guide you through a gradual dose escalation to minimize side effects.
    • Do not adjust your dose without medical guidance.
  • Weigh yourself once weekly at the same time of day to track progress.
  • Monitor hydration — signs of dehydration include dizziness, dark urine, or dry mouth.
  • Report persistent nausea, vomiting, or abdominal pain immediately — these may indicate rare side effects such as pancreatitis or gallbladder irritation.
  • Schedule follow-up visits every 4–6 weeks for evaluation, dosing adjustments, and progress tracking.

RESULTS AND MAINTENANCE

  • Most patients begin noticing reduced appetite and early weight loss within 2–4 weeks.
  • Steady, healthy weight reduction continues over 3–6 months, depending on dosage and lifestyle adherence.
  • Full metabolic and body composition improvements occur over 6–12 months of consistent therapy.
  • Once goal weight is achieved, your provider may recommend a maintenance dose to sustain results.
