ABOUT LASER VEIN REMOVAL

Laser Vein Removal is a non-invasive treatment designed to safely reduce the appearance of unwanted superficial veins, including spider veins and small reticular veins, most commonly on the face and legs.

The laser delivers targeted energy to the vein, causing it to heat, collapse, and gradually be reabsorbed by the body over time. Surrounding skin and tissue are preserved.

Laser vein therapy improves skin clarity and appearance with minimal downtime. Proper preparation and post-treatment care are essential to ensure optimal results, reduce side effects, and promote proper healing.

PRE-TREATMENT CARE

Before Your Appointment

  • Arrive with clean skin — no makeup, lotion, oils, self-tanner, or sunscreen on the treatment area.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing, especially for leg vein treatments.
  • If treating legs, consider bringing compression stockings if previously recommended by your provider.

1–2 Weeks Before Treatment

  • Avoid sun exposure, tanning beds, and spray tans for at least 1–2 weeks prior to treatment.
  • Discontinue self-tanning products for 1 week before treatment.
  • Avoid blood-thinning supplements for 7 days prior unless medically necessary, including:
    • Aspirin
    • Ibuprofen or naproxen
    • Fish oil
    • Vitamin E
    • Ginkgo biloba
  • Avoid retinoids, exfoliants, or harsh skincare products on the treatment area for 5–7 days prior.
  • Avoid laser treatments, sclerotherapy, or chemical peels in the same area for at least 2 weeks prior.

Medications & Medical History

  • Inform your provider if you:
    • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
    • Have a history of blood clots or clotting disorders
    • Take anticoagulants or blood thinners
    • Have vascular disease, diabetes, or poor circulation
  • Review all medications with your provider to determine if any are photosensitizing or contraindicated.

Day of Appointment

  • Hydrate well and eat a light meal before treatment.
  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours prior.
  • Do not shave the area the day of treatment (shave 24 hours before if needed).
  • Notify your provider of any new rashes, infections, or skin irritation in the treatment area.

POST-TREATMENT CARE

Laser vein treatment triggers a controlled inflammatory response as the vein closes and is reabsorbed. Proper aftercare helps minimize side effects and improves outcomes.

Immediately After Treatment

  • Mild redness, swelling, warmth, or bruising is normal and may last several hours to a few days.
  • Treated veins may appear darker or more prominent initially — this is expected.
  • Apply cold compresses as needed (10 minutes on, 10 minutes off).
  • Avoid touching, rubbing, or massaging the treated area.

First 24–72 Hours

  • Keep the area clean and dry.
  • Avoid:
    • Hot showers or baths
    • Saunas and hot tubs
    • Intense exercise or heavy sweating
    • Prolonged standing or sitting (for leg veins)
  • Avoid alcohol for 24–48 hours to reduce inflammation.
  • Wear compression stockings if recommended by your provider (typically 24–72 hours or longer depending on treatment area).
  • Tylenol (acetaminophen) may be taken for discomfort. Avoid NSAIDs unless prescribed.

Days 3–14: Healing Phase

  • Bruising and tenderness may persist and gradually fade.
  • Veins will slowly lighten and shrink over several weeks.
  • Do not pick, scratch, or massage the area.
  • Continue wearing compression stockings as instructed.
  • Apply SPF 30+ sunscreen daily to exposed areas to prevent pigmentation changes.
  • Avoid sun exposure and tanning until skin is fully healed.

After 2 Weeks

  • You may resume normal activities and exercise if no tenderness remains.
  • Avoid additional vein treatments or aggressive skin procedures in the area unless approved by your provider.
  • Continue sun protection to maintain results.

RESULTS AND TREATMENT PLAN

  • Treated veins gradually fade over 4–8 weeks as the body absorbs them.
  • Some veins may require multiple treatment sessions for optimal clearance.
  • New veins may develop over time due to genetics, hormones, or lifestyle factors.
  • Maintenance treatments may be recommended.
