ABOUT LIP FLIP
A Lip Flip is a subtle, non-surgical enhancement performed using Botox®, Dysport®, or Xeomin® to relax the muscles around the upper lip.
By gently relaxing the orbicularis oris muscle, the upper lip rolls slightly outward, creating the appearance of a fuller, more defined, and natural-looking lip shape — without adding volume.
This treatment is ideal for patients who want:
- A subtle, natural enhancement of the upper lip
- Less “gummy” smile appearance
- More visible upper lip when smiling
- Improved lip symmetry
Results appear gradually over several days and typically last 2–3 months.
PRE-TREATMENT CARE
1 Week Before Treatment
- Avoid blood-thinning medications and supplements (unless prescribed) to reduce the risk of bruising:
- Aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), naproxen (Aleve), ginkgo biloba, garlic, flaxseed oil, fish oil, Vitamin E, and other essential fatty acids.
- Avoid alcohol and caffeine for 24 hours before your appointment.
- Do not schedule treatment within 2 weeks of a major event, as mild swelling or bruising can occur.
- If you have a history of cold sores (Herpes Simplex virus), notify your provider — antiviral medication (e.g., valacyclovir) may be prescribed as a preventive measure.
- Avoid dental work (cleanings, fillings, whitening) for 1 week before and after your Lip Flip.
Day of Treatment
- Arrive with a clean face — no makeup, lip balm, or lotion on or around the lips.
- Eat a small meal or snack prior to treatment to avoid lightheadedness.
- Avoid intense exercise right before your appointment.
- Let your provider know if you:
- Are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning pregnancy.
- Have had recent filler or neurotoxin treatments near the mouth.
- Have any muscle or nerve conditions.
POST-TREATMENT CARE
Immediately After Treatment
- Do not rub, touch, or apply pressure to the treated area for at least 4 hours.
- Avoid resting your face on your hands or pressing lips tightly together.
- Avoid lying flat or bending forward for 4 hours after treatment to prevent product migration.
- Do not apply makeup, lipstick, or lip balm for 24 hours.
- Avoid intense exercise, saunas, or hot tubs for 24 hours.
- Avoid drinking through a straw or using suction for 24 hours, as this may interfere with the placement of the neurotoxin.
- Do not massage or manipulate the treated area.
- You may use a cool compress (not ice directly) if mild swelling or discomfort occurs.
First 24–48 Hours
- Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and salty foods, which can contribute to swelling.
- Minor bruising, tenderness, or slight swelling is normal and typically resolves within a few days.
- If bruising appears, Arnica gel or oral Arnica tablets can help reduce discoloration.
- You may take Tylenol (acetaminophen) for mild discomfort; avoid NSAIDs (ibuprofen, aspirin) unless prescribed.
- Do not schedule dental work, facials, or massages for at least 1 week after treatment.
First Week
- Results begin to appear in 3–5 days, with full effects visible at around 10–14 days.
- You may notice a mild “tight” or “different” feeling when speaking, drinking, or smiling during this adjustment period — this is normal and temporary.
- Avoid excessive movement of the lips (whistling, sucking through straws, or smoking) for 24–48 hours to allow the neurotoxin to settle.
- Avoid laser or heat-based treatments near the treated area for 1 week.
RESULTS AND TREATMENT PLAN
- Visible improvement typically occurs within 1 week, with the lip appearing slightly fuller and more defined.
- Maximum results are seen at 2 weeks post-treatment.
- Effects last approximately 2–3 months, and touch-up sessions are recommended to maintain results.
- Many patients combine Lip Flip with Dermal Fillers for enhanced lip shape and balance — your provider can recommend the best plan for your aesthetic goals.
